Global Ophthalmoplegia Market

Ophthalmoplegia is an eye disorder in which one or more of the six muscles of the eye got affected and thus causing it to weakness of the eye muscles which ultimately leads to eye paralysis. This disorder can be congenital or also can be developed later in life. Few common causes include brain tumor, migraine, thyroid disease, stroke, infection in the eye and any kind of brain injuries.

There are two types of ophthalmoplegia: chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia and internal ophthalmoplegia. Chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia is mostly seen in adults between the ages of 18 and 40 years. It typically begins with drooping eyelids as patient finds difficulty in controlling the muscles that coordinate the eyes.

Diabetic Ophthalmoplegia:

Sparing of the pupil with paralysis of the third cranial nerve has been reported to be characteristic of diabetic ophthalmoplegia. In a large series of oculomotor paralyses, 18 out of 20 diabetic patients showed sparing of the pupil. The one histopathologic study of diabetic third nerve paralysis suggested that the normal pupillary reactions were due to sparing of the circumferential portion of the third nerve.
